A Wintery 1st Birthday for Clover

My sister’s little bambino, Clover, turned 1 right before Christmas. I can’t believe how incredibly fast that first year goes by….anywho….

My sister had a definite theme in mind so we ran with it for the party invites for the birthday girl….Sorry that I don’t have any actual photos of these adorable invites {we were right smack dab in the middle of moving}.

Penguins…yes adorable, chubby little penguins all geared up for some winter fun. So totally cute…wish I had thought of such a cute theme for my kiddo’s first birthday!

We also created some other paper goods for the big day that you can see in some of the photos below from the party itself….

Follow the Wife: “How’s Married Life?”

Hi all! Follow the Bride is back, only now I am a wife! Aimee asked me to do a little guest posting while she settled in with her new baby and I cannot wait to catch up with you!

I last left you with some wedding recap action, so we can skip over that and get right to the good stuff. Since May, I’ve been asked approximately 6,789 times how married life is. My answer: The same, but with a lot more paper work. (Name changes, bank accounts, passports, health insurance, etc., etc. You get the idea.)

What's different about being married? We had a good reason to go to Hawaii.

I can’t really complain because I am guilty of asking many newlyweds that question as well. So I got to thinking and realized that there are actually many different things about married life. Don’t fret, my pretties. I think you will enjoy them.

I have a new name. Becoming an official Mrs. was actually pretty painless—a short wait in town hall, a quick form and small fee. All this followed by a much-anticipated walk down the aisle and an expensive party. Boom. Attaching my new name to that title took a bit more work. (You can read my guide to changing your name here.) I never thought twice about changing my name, but when the operator at the DMV handed me my new license I felt a little pang of sadness for what I was giving up. It took some time, but I finally don’t look at my name printed somewhere and wonder, (out loud sometimes,) “who is that?” I love having the same name as my husband and I try to use my new credit card as often as possible so I can sign that name all over town (just kidding, not really.)

I have another family to visit on holidays. This is both a fun and hard part of being married. I loved sharing our first married Christmas together—we started new traditions that I’m sure our kids will enjoy in seasons to come. But that also meant letting go of some of my old traditions. It was a little sad to not spent Christmas Eve with my parents and brother, but I felt like one of the family at my husband’s aunt’s Secret Santa. And I have the wacky gifts to prove it!

I am always thinking about my husband. I consider him in each decision I make—even when it is about ordering another beer at happy hour. Last Friday I met my old roommates for a drink in New York before taking the train home. After our second round, I said goodbye. I knew if I left then I would get home in time to enjoy the rest of the evening with my husband. And when I am blogging (or Pinteresting) when my husband gets home after me, I close my laptop to spend that time with him instead. These are only little things, but before we were living together and married, I didn’t ever have to think of them. Single Libby usually stayed out for one more round!

I’m sure I could find other things that are different about marriage. Married ladies, I bet you could, too! Do you notice any difference in your life now that you are hitched?

Friday Finds: Erstwhile Jewelry Co.

Admittedly, I’m not a huge jewelry wearer. I wear my wedding band and engagement ring every day, but that’s about it. Actually the last time I actually wore any jewelry, my daughter yanked a layered/beaded necklace off my neck and beads and crystals went flying everywhere. I was finding pieces of my statement necklace for months all over the house. Lesson learned.

But that doesn’t mean that a gal can’t still drool over some lovely baubles, right? Enter Erstwhile Jewelry Co.! I mean, check these rings out!! GORGEOUS!!!

Just stunning….I’m a huge sucker for gorgeous bling!! These do not disappoint in the eye candy department, right?

Jonny’s Bar Mitzvah Monogram

Its always so nice to get to step outside of the wedding box and do something that would totally not fly with the wedding crowd…

So when Jonny’s mom came to us for his Bar Mitzvah monogram design, we jumped at the chance! Here is what Jonny was looking for…

Since Jonny has dreams of becoming a marine biologist someday, he really wanted to play up a sea life theme in bright bold colors. We didn’t want the overall feel to be too juvenile so we chose artwork that had a hand drawn vintage quality.

Jonny selected most of the critters in this design himself so it made the overall design feel really personal.

Inspiration Board Wednesday: Black Tie

How is it already February???

Its been such a loooong time since I’ve created an inspiration board. But there was something about the bridesmaid dress in the upper left corner that was begging to be turned into a fun black and white, leaning towards formal, board.

I like that there are playful elements in this board. No one says a wedding has to be so serious in every aspect. Its 100% okay to include personal touches for the big day…your guests will feel more connected to you and the new Mr.!

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your patience in my blogging absence...Just a quick note though….

Our studio will be closed from mid-January through all of February while we adjust ourselves to adding another human to the mix. We will be checking email but we will not be designing or printing during that time frame. This means that our Etsy shop will also be closed so if you are looking to order some monograms or ready made paper goods, hop on over and get ordering!

So the holidays came and went in a blur of sinus infections and exhaustion but it was so nice to just be around family that I toughed it out and had one of the most relaxing Christmas days that I can ever recall….

But onto some fun news….

Its always so fun to see the launch of the next year’s Bella Figura designs. We start the designing process for the next year in April so when December rolls around, all of the Bella Figura designers are uber excited to see their stuff in print!

So we had our first snowfall yesterday. While the main roads and highways were pretty clear, the side streets were so slick. We got less than an inch but it made for a messy drive for sure….

No Place Like Home: Bring on the Holidays

Phew….its been a whirlwind guys. Packing up your life and shoving it into boxes is utterly exhausting work. For almost an entire day, I didn’t sit down once, until I climbed into bed.

But for all of the hard work, I couldn’t be happier in the new place. Home ownership is the same no matter what the age of the house and there is still tons of work to get done. Plus we are hosting Christmas Eve at our house this year, no pressure. I keep staring at the boxes that are piled up everywhere hoping that they will someday feel bad enough for me and just unpack themselves.

Because repainting rooms and making things our own isn’t quite in the cards for us before the holiday, I’ve been thinking of very neutral ways to decorate for the holidays that won’t make me feel like I spent a fortune on something I won’t use again. I want a very sparkly kinda’ thing to happen here so I headed over to Pinterest to get some inspiration!

And then I came across this…

I can’t wait to get the holiday decorating mojo flowing…so excited to get to work on some pretty ideas!!!

So sorry for the lack of posting last week…we are busy bees over here between the packing and paperwork and pregnancy….who has time to drool over much of anything??

We move into our new place on the 19th so it sort of feels like we are in the home stretch now…but there is still stuff that needs to be taken care of in our current house. Like radon mitigation…oh joy.

Inspiration Board Wednesday {Rewind}: Halloween Glam

I really liked creating this board....its not a traditional Halloween palette which makes it still really suitable for a wedding. I left the ghoulish decorations out of this but if your wedding is more free spirited than traditional, you could certainly add them in! I envisioned lots of terrariums and moody lighting for this, with lots and lots of ornate details and intricate patterns on things like the invites and cake.

No Place Like Home

So lots of stuff has been going on here. For starters, we sold our house! {YAY!!!} But the new buyer wants to close in 30 days {BOO!!!}. So that meant some rearranging at our end a bit since 30 days isn’t enough time to build a house like we planned.

Its so strange how things pan out sometimes. We had a whirlwind of a week with several showings. Even with all of the showings, I was skill really negative about the whole process, mostly just because after several months of having our house on the market, I was tired of the right buyer NOT walking through our door.

But it happened…and it happened FAST! The buyer came, looked and sent us an offer almost immediately! Moral of the story: There is a buyer out there for every house. You just need to have the patience to stick it out until he/she comes through your door! I was truly ready to give up and accept our fate of staying in this house forever!

Once the excitement wore off, we had to get down to business and had a marathon house hunting day last week. We saw many beautiful homes but in the end, the first house we looked at turned out to be “THE ONE”. Here’s a little sneak peek:

It was really the only house that didn’t need anything done to it…move in ready 100%. We were nervous to put our offer in since the house wasn’t even on the market for 30 days but in the blink of an eye, the big move was in motion!!!

So excuse any lags in posting for the next few weeks. There is tons of stuff to pack and things to arrange {like inspections and movers, etc} before we head out of here into our new abode. And I’m almost 26 weeks pregnant…I definitely don’t move as quickly as I would like these days!

I really like the thought of keeping a really fresh creamy white palette for fall. But I love it even more when its paired with a hint of golden sparkle. You can use the standard fall motifs, like leaves and pumpkins, but glam them up with some sparkly fun!

The Circus Came to Town

Well this past Saturday was the big 5 year old birthday party! I’m so glad that I took the time to really plan things out because it would have been a disaster if I had just winged it. 14 4 year olds bombarded my house….I’m pretty sure I’m still recovering!

Here are some pictures of the dessert/favor table from the party. This part took so much planning. Luckily I had enough stuff shipped to my house ahead of time so that I wasn’t left scrambling at the last minute.

First up, the invites….

Next up the super crazy dessert buffet. Its possibly the first time I’ve ever had a dessert table meet/exceed my expectations!

The table included take home items such as popcorn, cookies, circus themed cake pops, old fashioned candy sticks and swirl lollipops!

When it was time to have some yummy cake, each child took a bottle of circus punch to was it down!

At the end of the party, each kid received a favor bag and they have the chance to load up on all the goodies from the table. All in all, it was a smashing success!

Friday Finds: Lionsgate Designs

For a long time, I was on the fence about brooch bouquets. But now that I am trying to live life a little more eco-friendly, I am really starting to appreciate the skill involved in taking something vintage and making it style appropriate for today!

Lionsgate Designs has some really pretty and colorful brooch bouquets that I just fell in love with! Here are some of my faves…

Good ol’ Fashioned Kansas City BBQ

Jen has been a repeat customer for several big occasions in her life and a birthday party/BBQ for her hubby was no exception. Jen gave us minimal direction on this design, really only giving us an initial party concept. So we took it and ran with it!

We used a classic gingham pattern in red and paired the overall design with some really masculine fonts. We chose to print this on an 80lb cream Dutch felt cardstock which, we think, adds a really nice textural element. To complete the overall rustic feel, we added a Kraft paper envelope. All about the texture….

A design like this would make a fun rehearsal dinner invitation, don’t you think?

Inspiration Board Wednesday {Rewind}: Woodland Fall

Fall will officially be here this weekend. While I love fall, it also makes me very homesick for autumn in Connecticut. The fall in Kansas City is much too short and not nearly as pretty as it is in New England. But no matter where you are, there is so much inspiration to be found in fall.

I love the thought of using ferns and moss to adorn your location. Lots of dark wood tones would just make this event even better! And why not treat your guests to a woodsy dessert, like maybe, toasted marshmallows over a grand fire pit outdoors?

Circus Time

I’m having so much fun planning for my daughter’s 5th birthday party. I actually started putting some definite things in place this weekend so I’m feeling pretty good about my timeline, so far.

The focal point of the décor is going to be the dessert/favor table. The cake is already being planned out, so I sketched out my table set up around the cake. Excuse my feeble attempt here…

I should get back into drawing again…clearly I need the practice…

Anywho…

I’m so excited that I was able to purchase some of the definites for this portion of the party. I ordered the following items already:

Open topped popcorn boxes for the right and left sides of the table

Red topped vintage style glass jars for gumballs and rock candy

Striped paper straws for drinks

2 Small red suitcases for some yummy cake pops and swirled lollies

You may notice in my drawing that the beverages were left off. I wasn’t sure until this morning what to put the drinks in but I found this solution which will work perfectly….

The drinks with straws will go directly in front of the cake display! {And these are plastic bottles which makes me VERY happy…since I don’t want to have to chase down kids with glass bottles}.

I’m working on the invitations too….just fine tuning some of the details and such but I can’t wait to show them to you when they are done!!

I swear the last week went by in a blur. With everyday that passed I started feeling horrible for not posting anything! I promise I didn’t drop off the face of the earth!

There have been some very large projects that I’ve been working on, one of which includes an event invitation for a local business that is going to require 650 printed invitations! YIKES!!

But now that the large deadlines have been met I can get back to blogging….so be sure to check back this week for some inspiration!

Business Logo: P3, Lisa’s Perfectly Pink Platoon

I had the chance to work on a very very special logo this past week. Lisa is a previous client that has come to us for both a business logo for her own business, as well as, a personal custom monogram. When she came to us for a new logo, we were more than willing to lend our hand!

See, Lisa is currently battling Triple Negative cancer. It is not a well known cancer in that doctors don’t know what causes it. She has courageously put together a team to race in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on September 25th, 2011 and really wanted to create a unifying symbol for her very own personal warriors that will be racing with her, in body and in spirit.

With the help of my superstar illustrator friend, we came up with this for Lisa!

Lisa had some very specific ideas of the elements that she wanted to see incorporated into this logo and we were happy to oblige. Nothing like a little warrior glam, huh?

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Lisa and her family. While we won’t be there with you on race date, physically, please know that we will most definitely be with you in spirit!

Inspiration Board Wednesday: Olive You

They say that you are the most attracted to colors that look the best on you. Olive green is my best color…always has been. So its no surprise that I am inspired by this color in my own home and when it comes to a fall wedding.

There are many ways to add another element of color to this palette. You can add some neutrals, like brown or even gray, or you can add a pop of a bright color like peach, pink or yellow. In this board, we used peach mostly in the florals.

Friday Finds: Kansas City Irish Fest

This might be a strange Friday Finds but just follow me for a second…

The 9th annual Kansas City Irish Fest is taking place this weekend. If you are a KC dweller and have never been, SHAME! I’m not a huge festival goer usually but this festival really is a lot of fun. Great food {authentic fish n’ chips? Heck yes!}, fantastic music and entertainment and lots of crafts and activities for the kiddies.

My husband’s family is very heavily involved in much of the ongoings this weekend, volunteering at a variety of locations, so its always a family affair for us. But I can’t recommend it enough to those locals looking for some good times this weekend.

So if you’ve got nothing else going on today, Saturday or Sunday {my favorite group, the Elders, will be playing on Sunday so it’s a can’t miss for me!!} make sure you take a swing by Crown Center to enjoy some Irish festivities {did I mention the beer garden and whiskey tasting booths?}!

Inspiration Board Wednesday: Rustic Lodge

So I mentioned yesterday that I was starting the planning for the baby boy that will arrive in our lives at the end of January….

While I loved some of the things that I saw on Lay Baby Lay, it wasn’t quite what I was looking for but I did love the warmth that the inspiration boards had. So here is my first pass at this nursery…I’m sure it will change a hundred times before I start actually making it happen but at least I have an end goal…

So ideally this is going to be a very neutral palette, mostly black and khaki with hints of red. The buffalo plaid rug will really tie the red splashes together so I’m definitely looking forward to getting that in the room. The walls will be a light beige color. The room isn’t that large so I don’t want to go super dark on the walls but instead I’d rather keep them light. The vintage cabin sign is really the jumping off point for this entire board so hopefully I can snag it before someone else does….

As for furniture….not totally sure about it just yet. Since we are still in our house with no sign of moving anytime soon, I need to plan for the space that we have.

For the crib I was thinking of this, since its not solid wood and would probably make the space feel more open:

Not sure on a dresser/changing table combo just yet. I think I’m going to scour some local thrift stores and antique stores to see whats really out there…Wish me luck!

Making Room for Baby

Well originally, we were expected to wait until the 2nd week of September to find out what we are having. But after a little unplanned trip to the doc’s office last week, they decided to see if they could possibly tell what the little munchkin was, even thought it was earlier than they typically like to dole out that information…

Imagine my surprise when the doc informed me that we were having a BOY!!! Never in my wildest dreams did I expect that. I must have asked several times, “ARE YOU SURE???” because I would have sworn we were having another little girl.

So now that we, and you, know, let the planning officially begin! Its time that I start nailing down some nursery ideas so that I can start shopping for stuff now. I’m not a last minute kinda’ gal so I definitely don’t want to wait until I’m too big to do the work myself.

While scouring the internet for some awesome boy nursery inspiration, I came across this blog: Lay Baby Lay

Inspiration Board Wednesday {Rewind}: Party Purple

I always find color combos like this interesting. A dusty color paired with a strong vibrant color makes my eyes happy….This palette is no different. I think there are a couple of approaches to this palette…keep it mostly white with pops of the accent colors OR go really heavy with the purples and add small hints of red OR go super heavy on the red and add in small layers of the purples.

This palette is super fun…so it goes without saying that fun details like paper pomanders for decorations and a mix of fun patterned papers or fabrics are the perfect touch.

Friday Finds: Circus Finds

So I mentioned some time ago that I was working on the planning of my daughters 5th birthday party in October. While most of the items I will probably create on my own, Etsy is going to be a wonderful resource for me as well. While my goal is a kid’s birthday party, I could totally see some of these translating into a circus or carnival themed wedding or soiree.

Overall, this is the look I’m shooting for….

There are so many ways I could go about this really….but here are some things that I’m thinking are going to be a must for this party!

No Place Like Home: Is it over yet?

For those of you who have never tried selling a house, its extremely stressful. Sometimes the waiting on feedback from a potential buyer is enough to make me want to pull my hair out. I keep telling myself that we are in this for the long haul but still, the endless tidying up on a daily basis is exhausting. And the one day that you “let it go” a bit out of perfection is inevitably the ONE day that you get the call that you have a showing.

On the one hand my house has never looked better..but its met with much exhaustion that by 8:00pm I’m ready for bed.

So please forgive the sporadic posting…Its hard to be quippy and journalistically creative when you are utterly ready to fall asleep at any given moment…

What happens in Vegas….

I had a chance to work on a REALLY fun item a few weeks ago…

Jenn commissioned me to create a Vegas itinerary for a very special weekend celebrating her husband’s {and some of his friends} 40th birthday. I jumped at the chance because its so DIFFERENT from what I normally do.

We created a tri-fold brochure style itinerary complete with fun Vegas-y items like poker chips and marquis signs. We kept the colors bright and bold to reflect the bright lights of Vegas!

We also created a coordinating tag that Jenn added to survival goody bags in each guest’s room. The survival bag had aspirin, bottles of water, chocolate poker chips and some other fun Vegas essentials.

It was so fun to work on this project! Thanks for thinking of us Jenn!

An Artsy Party

Kid’s birthday party invites are so much fun to work on. Its so freeing to escape the formal etiquette driven process of creating wedding invitations. The design concepts are so fantastic and are limited only by the parents’ and kids’ imaginations!

This bright and bold 4 year old birthday invitation is a reflection of the party’s location…an art studio/gallery!

Taking cues from its location, we chose to use a bright rainbow variety of crayon colors and lots of fun handwritten fonts to complete the look.

And we couldn’t leave the envelope un-designed. so we added some crayon scribbles to the back flap and placed the return address right over the top of it.

A Special 60th Birthday Celebration: The Planning Begins

I had the chance to work on some paper goods for a VERY special 60th surprise birthday party for my mom at the beginning of July. It was so much fun to work on the paper goods and the planning {which I luckily had a chance to work on this with my uber talented sister}.

To start off the planning, we really needed to focus our vision. Luckily my sister and I were on the same page with the overall feel so the rest was a breeze.

Naturally, I created an inspiration board way back in April to get the juices flowing.

{sorry for the lack of credit keeping…I wasn’t really planning to share this part of our experience but I think its necessary…}

We knew that we wanted something that was earthy and organic in feel and we didn’t want the event to be this explosion of bright colors. We wanted it to feel really elegant and thoughtful.

We honed in on the glass jars as the mainstay for our tables. We wanted to keep the florals light and fresh so we chose to go with white and a bit of green. We both really loved the thought of using burlap on the tables too. We recognized that we didn’t want the tables to be over the top and in order to keep things feeling really organic, we chose burlap as a jumping off point.

We also felt it totally necessary to use old vintage photos of my mom somehow. In the beginning we didn’t really know how we were going to do that but we came up with a great solution that was definitely the talk of the party!

I can’t wait to show you how this all turned out….Check back next week for some chit chat on the paper goods that we created for this special event!

No Place Like Home: Buy My House…Seriously

In light of my recent news that we are expecting bambino #2, we had to make a tough decision. Our initial plans with our current abode were to stay put until we had a chance to complete all of the little things that were nagging us, both inside and out.

After discussing things with our realtor, we decided that NOW would be the best time to list our house on the market. The interest rates are still relatively low which means we can find more potential buyers. I was sold. Later that same day, I found out I was pregnant so it was a blessing in disguise!

But then began the looooong list of things to be done in the house {and out}. We opted to list the house the day we left for our 12 day east coast excursion, since no one would be in the house for that amount of time, cluttering it up and making a mess. And truthfully with all of the work we did, the vacation was that much sweeter.

Here is what our list looked like:

Landscape “rock garden” in backyard to make it usable outdoor living space
Replace crumbling brick planter box in front
Paint all interiors of closets {5 to be exact}
Touch up ceiling paint in every room
Paint trim in full bath
Tidy up entire yard
Clean out the garage {this was a doozy}
Deep clean every room, including trim, baseboards, floors, windows, etc.
Switch direction of master bedroom furniture
Touch up walls
Hang new non-personalized artwork
DECLUTTER every square inch of space
Reposition outdoor furniture
Paint garage floor
Clean up laundry area
Empty all closets and move stuff to storage or donate

Of everything on this list, the ONLY thing that didn’t get completed was painting the garage floor. After much debate, we realized it was too big a task for us to take on alone and it wasn’t cheap to hire someone. So we made the decision to leave it alone and let the next homeowners worry about it.

I won’t show every detail of the things we accomplished but here is the definite highlight….

Before…an unsightly useless mess that nagged at us since we moved in…

And after…..a cozy outdoor living space

While we certainly can’t take the credit for physically making this happen, we hired a skilled professional, we certainly are glad that we spent the money on this task. It was well worth it for us and hopefully potential homebuyers will see it as beneficial space for them too!

So the house is officially listed…we’ve had 3 showings and a possible offer coming our way. I’m trying not to get too excited about it but I’ll take something over nothing at this point. Now that we have a reason to move, I want out! So buy my house…seriously…

Having a Nantucket wedding means using lots of the natural decorations such as shells and sea grasses. And it would be mandatory {in my mind anyways} to have a lobster/clam bake to entertain your guests. Great example of working with your environment!

Making Room for Baby

Sooooo lots has been going on here at Creative Montage but the most exciting thing is that we are having a baby! My first little munchkin will be 5 years old in October so we are thrilled to have the pitter patter of little baby feet running around here again. That said…so much has to be done before my due date {which is at the end of January}.

Since I haven’t had any applicants for a new Follow the Bride, I’ll reserve Tuesdays for all things babies and kiddos. Not only will I talk about the on-goings of our little winter arrival, but I’ll also start sharing some fun bambino things that we have worked on for our clients. I’ll also share some of the things that I’ll be working on for the big 5 year old circus themed birthday bash that I’m planning for October.

Oh and of course you know that I’m already mentally planning the birth announcements and other fun things for baby #2 so I’ll be sharing some of those things along the way too.

Ok so its probably no surprise to you that I have seasonal A.D.H.D. I just love the turn of the seasons and the new revitalization that each change brings. So it should also come as no surprise to you that I’m eager for fall to get here.

Coming from New England, nothing says fall more than tweed. So I put this board together with that crisp fall air in mind. Warm colors and textures paired with some whimsical touches, like newsboy hats for the guys, really make me long for the crisp autumn air that just isn’t the same here in Kansas City.

Follow the Bride: Wedding Day Emotions

I was so calm on my wedding day. It was so much fun to have my close friends together that morning, each of us getting pampered with beauty treatments and enjoying breakfast and conversation.

I felt so relaxed and not a bit nervous about the rest of the day. Well, that’s not entirely true. I was a little nervous, but not for the same reasons as most brides. I was afraid I’d feel sick and tired all day. Let me back up a little. On Wednesday night, Keith and I went to bed with stomach aches. “We’re just over tired,” I said. A few hours later I woke up with full blown stomach flu. It was bad and even involved two fainting spells! Keith was sick, too, but his symptoms were less severe. I spent Thursday on the couch, alternating between crying, “why me” and dozing off during "Minority Report" on TBS. My mom and dad finished my last minute errands. By Friday I was doing better, but my appetite was not back. My stomach ache returned at dinner and kept me awake most of the night. I woke up thrilled that I was getting married, but really nervous I was going to feel tired and sick all day. And I REALLY wanted to enjoy our champagne toast!

I did enjoy a full glass of champagne in the limo right after the ceremony. I think because I had enough adrenaline after what was by far the best part of the entire wedding day. I remember standing on the altar, holding Keith’s hand, thinking that this is my favorite part of the day. It didn’t matter what came next, this was the best part. I remember seeing the sun shine through the stained glass windows and thinking then that we were truly blessed and extremely happy.

I felt like I was on a cloud the rest of the afternoon! We had so much fun riding back from the church and taking group portraits.

When we arrived at the Lawn Club we were ushered into a private bridal suite set up with a full bar and snacks. The room had dark wood paneled walls lined with art deco-like sconces. A big fireplace surrounded by blue arm chairs was the centerpiece of the room and I was so glad to sit down in one and take the weight of my dress off my back. We all poured ourselves a drink and began posing for pictures. We were having a ball at the one part of the day that wasn’t on the “official” schedule.

Isn't there a saying that it's not a full day unless you laugh and cry. Well who ever said that must have been thinking of their wedding day because everyone involved feels a whole heap of emotions all at once—and it really feels good!

This weekend flew by…So much going on here its not even funny. Anywho….

Just wanted to let you all know that the Creative Montage website has been made a little more user friendly….finally!

It was too confusing before when adding things to the shopping cart before so now each type of item can be added separately. For instance, now you can add the invite and then go back and add either an RSVP card or postcard without any confusion! I still have some options to add but the bulk of it is ready to go!

Also, the Baby & Kiddo section is LIVE!!! This means that you can place an order directly from our site for your birth announcements and shower invitations! Easy peasy!

Follow the Bride: The Paper Goods

I know…I know…its not Tuesday and I’m not Elizabeth BUT I did create all of the paper goods for their big day so I thought I would start talking about it today….

First up, the save the dates…In keeping with the vintage feel for their big day, Elizabeth and Keith really loved the idea of using vintage posters as the model for their save the dates. So I took an actual vintage poster and recolored it to suit the colors of their wedding.

Save the date postcards are a great way to get info to your guests because it costs less to send them off than a conventional letter/envelope combo!

My daughter watched The Wizard of Oz for the first time the other day and LOVED it! I was mildly pleased since its one of my all time favorites. I thought it would be fun to use it as inspiration for a wedding but thought it would also make a nice party inspiration board.

Follow the Bride: Wedding Recap

Hello again readers! I'm back from our honeymoon, back to reality and ready to deliver all the glorious details of our special day.

To sum it all up: It was beyond perfect. Every detail came together better than I imagined it would and I have my wonderful family, friends and out of this world vendors to thank for it.

Here's a collection of some photos my mom and bridesmaids took:

I didn't sleep much the night before and I was up and at 'em when the alarm went off at 5:40! The girls met me at the New Haven Lawn Club and we started hair and makeup right away. My biggest compliments go out to Amy and Caty of Dana Bartone in Cheshire, CT. I'll let the "before" and "after" shots speak for themselves.

Meanwhile, my Anne Barge gown spent the morning "breathing" in the other room. I kept this detail a secret because I was really looking forward to a big reveal. And it was worth the wait. One friend told me she was shocked when she saw it!

Um, I'm still shocked when I look at it!

Then the flowers arrived and we all gasped and signed some more. I worked with Elisabeth at Blush Floral Design in Madison, CT. I think it's safe to say she's the best of the best.

I wouldn't let anyone change until we snapped a picture in our new robes. Mine was a present from the bridal party and I gifted them these robes from Pretty Plum Sugar.

Getting into the dress required the efforts of every bridesmaid, each one having to push, pull, clasp, snap and finally tie me in. I also needed help finding my feet under all those layers so I could slip my shoes on.

Remember those super cute designer shoes I found a while back? Well they hurt real bad so I returned them and was lucky enough to find these to replace them.

All gussied up we made our way downstairs for a few formal portraits before hopping into our super comfy and extra lux party bus! Woohoo!

The best part is yet to come! I'll follow up later this week with the ceremony story.

Inspiration Board Wednesday: Vintage Peacock

Last week, I reposted a peacock inspiration board that was fun and vibrant. While this board certainly has those characteristics, I toned down the feel a bit and made it more of a vintage feel. I kept things very light and really only made the peacock feathers just the accents so that there was just a hint of color.

I love the thought of using vintage bird cages at each table and really think a short dress would be the perfect touch! Great heels are a MUST when wearing a short dress and I just love the ones in this board.

No Place Like Home: The Laundry Room, Part 1

This location in our current house, pains me. Currently we live in a 1950’s side split level house, with no basement, just a crawl space. So the “laundry room” has always been in the garage. That’s not where we decided to put it, but since there is no other space in this house to relocate it to {unless we remove some of the only linen closet storage we have in our bathroom}, it is what it is. Its dark, dingy and scary. And let’s be honest…its IN OUR GARAGE! This was a source of contention when we attempted to sell our house. Most buyers complained that they didn’t want to trek down to the garage to do laundry. But maybe if the space was nicer than this…….???

Now, to be fair, we tried to make it somewhat more of a “room” in our garage so that we didn’t feel like we had to fold laundry on top of our cars. BUT what we neglected to pay attention to was that most of the interior of the space just had too much plumbing, electrical, water heater and HVAC nonsense to really make it presentable looking. So only 1.5 of the walls can actually be sheetrocked. But it does have a door….does that make any difference? No? Ok…moving on then….

But my friends….that is all going to change…Here are the things that have been grabbing my attention.

Since we have nice, new, front loading machines, we will be stacking them to maximize the small new room that will be built alongside the existing space. I would like to include at least one hanging bar on the side of the machines, since we don’t currently have a place to air dry anything or hang things up to prevent wrinkles.

There isn’t currently a place for us to fold laundry in le dungeon, so counter space will be a must down there. It doesn’t need to be huge but just sufficient enough to fold things and carry them back upstairs. I also think its going to be necessary to have a place for ironing board storage since currently it just hangs out with the rest of our garage-like tools, like shovels and brooms. Classy.

The newly built space will enclose an exterior door. I think it might be kind of nice to make the space double as a small mudroom with a place for coats, shoes, etc. Cabinet storage above the folding area would be great to have in the space since we will have to give up the storage pedestals that we currently have for our machines, in order to stack them.

Since we will not have any windows in the space which would really help in the dungeon department, color is going to be key. I know that I want to do something bright and cheery down there because let’s face it….color makes people happy even when they are doing grunt housework!

And while our floor won’t be quite as stellar, we do have plans to repaint our icky looking garage floor to give it a nicer appearance inside the laundry area and the rest of the garage too. This part will actually have to be done first for obvious reasons…the thought of having to clear out the garage for that to happen, though, gives me a migraine.

It’s a tall order….vents and hoses will have to be relocated and who the heck wants to be stuck down there long enough to do anything at all!

Ok I’m ready to start on this project NOW!!! Hope my husband is reading this….I hate dropping subtle hints…I’ll keep you posted on the progress!

Follow the Bride: My last post!

Today is my last Follow the Bride post. I’m so excited that our wedding is only 4 days away, but I’m sad that my weekly ritual here at Creative Odds ‘n Ends is coming to an end. I loved sharing wedding details with you all, and it was so helpful and enlightening to read your comments and advice. I really wanted to keep a journal during my engagement but at the end of each day I was just too tired. I’m glad I can look back on these posts and laugh about the little things I worried about and reminisce about the great times I had with Keith, our families and our friends.

The closer we get, the more people ask how I’m doing. I jinxed myself earlier by saying I was so calm. As soon as I uttered the words, my computer crashed and I lost the entire word document I was working on (um, the first draft of this post). At that same moment I realized we left someone off the rehearsal dinner guest list! I got pretty frantic but it was an easy fix and I’m feeling pretty cool right now. I still can’t shake the feeling that I’m forgetting something. All I can do now is roll with the punches. I know I’ll make it to Saturday in one perfectly manicured piece and I’ll have an amazing day with the people I love the most. If any detail is less than perfect, well, I just hope no one notices. (And if you do, please don’t complain about it to me!)

There was a lot of Royal inspiration last week that I am purposefully omitting…Watching the wedding was definitely my guilty pleasure and I was definitely impressed with the elegance that is Kate Middleton but feel like people may be ready to move on from the moment, so I’m choosing to not really post any recaps about it. However, the designer in me definitely took note and was highly impressed!

Follow the Bride: The Royal Wedding is Here!

Happy Royal Wedding Day! Who woke up to watch the big event? I set my alarm for 5:15 am but was wide awake at 5:00 so I snuggled into a comfy bathrobe and scrambled over to the couch to tune in. Lucky for me, Prince William and Prince Harry made their first appearance at 5:10. I watched the rest of the High Royals and the Middleton’s parade to Westminster Abbey and I’m not ashamed to admit, I got goosebumps. I love the excitement at the start of a wedding, and even though I wasn’t wearing a fancy hat and sitting alongside Posh Spice, I was feeling the Royal Wedding Frenzy!

I didn’t spend much time speculating about Kate’s dress, but I’m happy to say I was right! She looked stunning and sophisticated with long sleeves and a regal collar. The lace overlay was gorgeous. I really hope that we start to see more brides in long sleeve gowns.

As for her bouquet, I’ll admit I was not smitten with her tiny arrangement. The cost of the Royal Wedding flowers was close to $300,000! If she wanted a cascading bouquet, she’d have had one. I’m curious why Kate opted to carry something so small. I know bouquet trends are on the cusp of a change, so is this what we’ll see next? Did anyone love her bouquet?

As for the attendants, Kate and Will had a pretty traditional wedding party. And by traditional, I mean the traditions of us common folk. Matt Lauer explained it was somewhat of a break in Royal tradition for Will to have a Best Man. I’m glad to see that some parts of the Royal Wedding are modern.

What I really loved was the not so modern tradition of the Maid of Honor, Kate’s sister, wearing white. I learned that bridesmaids used to wear matching white dresses, identical to the bride, so the evil spirits would not know who was getting married. There was no mistaking who the bride was today, but I still love the symbolism of that tradition.

Also in white were Kate’s “bridesmaids”. A 3-year-old is a fluffy white dress is what I like to call a flower girl. But this is the Royal Wedding and if they want to call the flower girls, bridesmaids, far be it from me to object. Here’s my point. I picked out almost identical dresses for my 2-year-old “bridesmaids”! I always knew I had Royal taste!

I watched most of the ceremony and then had to get ready for work. I didn’t get to watch the kiss on the balcony, but I’m sure I’ll be able to catch up on what’s happening between meetings and assignments today.

Did anyone else wake up to watch the Royal Wedding? What are your thoughts on Kate’s dress? Her flowers? And her troop of tiny bridesmaids?

Follow the Bride: Weighing in on the Royal Wedding

The Royal Wedding week has arrived. I’m slightly less obsessed with this event than I’d like to be, but I’m getting into it now. Plus, I can’t very well call myself a wedding blogger if I don’t weigh in on Will and Kate. So let’s get down to it. Here are a few of Follow the Bride’s Royal Wedding Musings:

1. First and foremost, the dress. Kate’s quickly becoming a fashion icon and a lot of bloggers are putting her in edgy, forward dresses. I don’t think so. I’m anticipating Princess Catherine in a classic style, possibly with sleeves and a very regal collar. Ball gown? A-line? Trumpet? Gimme a break, I’ve got my own wedding to obsess over!

2. The guy. All I have to say is what happened to Prince William?

This is the Prince William most American girls wanted to marry....

And this is the Prince William Waity-Katie will marry.

3. The invites. What a royal bore! I got really excited about the creative side of planning our wedding. I loved looking for inspiration and I was so excited every time I a new proof came in. I’m sad Kate didn’t have any say in those details. But, I would have liked to use the wording, “The Lord Chamberlain is commanded by The Queen to invite…” in our invites.

Sir Elton John must have taken a major snooze when he saw this in his mail!

4. The Royal reception. I anticipate this not being much fun for Kate. She’s got over a thousand people to hug, kiss and thank for coming, and I’m willing to bet “Shout” is on the Royal Wedding Band’s don’t play list.

5. The bride’s stress level. Kate’s playing the princess role well, she’s been nothing but graceful in all the press coverage leading up to the big day. If I were marrying the Prince, you’d see my ugly mug Lindsay Lohan-style all over the tabloids. The headline would read, “The Royal Bride Loses her Cool with Camilla!” Granted the things that I’m stressing over are details Kate’s probably never thought twice about. Then again, no one’s comparing me to Princess Diana.

A Modern Monogram for Elizabeth & Ryan

Quite some time ago, we worked on a custom monogram design for this couple. They came to us wanting something really clean and modern. This is what we came up with….

We utilized a classic style monogram and then paired it with a loose handwritten font. I think it adds a touch of unexpected to a pretty simple design.

Once we narrowed down the final monogram design, Elizabeth and Ryan wanted to translate that into a save the date design.

I just LOVE the fact that they chose the large round magnets. This concept just would not have had the same feel if we went with a square or rectangular shaped magnet.

When it came time for their rehearsal dinner invites, Elizabeth wanted to definitely have us create a design that was reflective of the the other things we created for her. We didn’t take a literal translation though…

I love the softness of the color palette. Instead of making on of the colors really stand out, I’ve created a more monochromatic look. What’s great about choosing a monochromatic-esque palette is that you can be really flexible with color matching!

A Bridal Party Party

Instead of a traditional bachelorette party, my bridesmaids planned a beautiful afternoon wine tasting in Connecticut. This state isn’t necessarily known for its vineyards, but it does have some quaint spots that form the CT Wine Trail.

Our lovely day began around 10:30 when everyone arrived at my apartment. I was in my bathrobe when the girls knocked on my door, so I quickly finished getting ready while everyone snacked on bagels and muffins. At 11:00 a limo pulled up in front of my house. As we piled in, I noticed an adorable tote bag on the seat and complimented my friend on her choice of carriers. After an odd pause, I looked again and noticed that the tote was monogrammed with my new initials! (I haven’t gotten used to seeing them.) The tote was stuffed with lingerie each bridesmaid had picked out, a silky robe to wear on the wedding day and a few other exciting gifts I got to open along the way.

We stopped at several vineyards and tried all of the fine vintages the state has to offer. For you wine buffs, our favorite was the Stone Table Red at Jonathan Edwards Winery in North Stonington. Maura, a white drinker, loved the 2007 Chardonnay from Salt Water Farm Vineyard in Stonington. (These two vineyards were my favorite! Salt Water Farm is one place I considered having our reception. It’s an old airplane hangar that’s been turned into a winery, and it’s located on a salt marsh! It was cloudy when we were there, but it’s got some really excellent views.)

In between one of the stops, Erin surprised me with a batch of chocolate covered strawberries. These were not your run-of–the-mill strawberries, these berries were decorated like the bridal party. The guys had on tuxedos, the girls were wearing navy blue bridesmaid dresses and there were two tiny little flower girls dressed in white. Erin even included details like bows, necklaces and a headpiece for the bride! She should go into business!

After an excellent afternoon we made our way back to my house to change for dinner. We had a late reservation at Barcelona, my favorite tapas restaurant in New Haven. It was loud and crowded that night, but I had such a great time chatting with my best girlfriends. Three of my bridesmaids are from college and two are friends from high school, so I’m really glad they got to know each other better. I think it will make the wedding day that much more fun for them. And how can I not be happy to see all my favorite people getting along!
